Giving Fido Treats

September 15, 2020
Does your dog like treats? If not, you may want to make an appointment for him, as that’s definitely unusual! Our canine pals are very, very enthusiastic about food, and they get adorably excited at the prospect of a snack. However, while Fido will happily gobble up almost anything you offer him, it is important to stick to healthy options. An Ellicott City, MD vet offers some ‘pointers’ on choosing and giving Fido snacks below.

Buying Snacks

Buying dog treats isn’t exactly rocket science, especially considering that Fido would be more than happy to sample all and any of them. However, try to stick with healthier brands. Get into the habit of reading labels, and choose products that list whole, natural ingredients. Meat, fish, or chicken should be listed first and most often on the label.

Tricks For Treats

Many dogs really love to please their humans. Fido gets very proud of himself when he’s being a good boy! Have your four-legged friend work for his snack. If your pooch is still learning obedience commands, Sit or Lay Down will work. Otherwise, have him do a cute trick, like Shake Paw.

Homemade Goodies

If you enjoy cooking, you can try making your furry friend’s snacks. Just stick to ingredients that you know are safe. Plain, cooked, meat, fish, or poultry without the skin, bones, or fat, is always a good bet. Fido can also have certain fruits and veggies, such as peas, carrots, and bananas. Ask your vet for suggestions.

Portion

It’s very easy to overfeed a pooch, especially one that’s very, very good at convincing you that he’s really hungry. Pay attention to Fido’s portions. Treats should only make up about 5 percent of his daily caloric intake.

Unsafe Foods

Never give your furry pal anything that contains garlic, onions, scallions, or chives; avocado; chocolate; caffeine; grapes, currants, or raisins; sugar; alcohol; or xylitol. Other unsafe foods include meat on the bone and raw meat, dough, and yeast.

Begging

Does Fido have you wrapped around his paws? If so, you may need to lay down the law. Begging may be cute, but it’s bad manners. It can also be dangerous, as your pet could convince someone to give him something that isn’t safe. Work on your canine buddy’s petiquette.
