Halloween With Hedgehogs

October 15, 2020
Halloween is just around the corner! In the veterinary world, we’re seeing lots of posts about celebrating the autumn holiday with dogs and cats. However, we have noticed a bit of a shortage of Halloween hedgehog posts. An Ellicott City, MD vet tackles this prickly topic below.

Photos

Hedgehogs are absolutely adorable, so it’s probably no surprise to discover that they take some super charming pictures! Snap a few pics of your little buddy against a scenic autumn backdrop. For props, you can use things like autumn leaves, pumpkins, or any safe, non-toxic seasonal decoration. Just make sure that Hedgie can’t eat or be injured by his props.

Outfits

We probably don’t have to tell you that hedgehogs in costumes are beyond adorable. Hedgie has been a shark, a bumblebee, a lobster, and even Dracula. If you do put your prickly buddy in costume, don’t leave him in it too long. Also, don’t force your hedgehog to wear clothes. If he looks uneasy, snap a quick photo and undress him. You can always try something lighter, like a tiny hat.

Background

Another way to get Hedgie in on the fun is to add some seasonal decorations to his cage. Look for a Halloween-themed hide box. You can also use seasonal blankets and dishes. Or, sew your pet a little bed using a material with autumn prints. Just don’t add any decorations that could choke, injure, or entangle your tiny friend.

Treats

Just like any other pet, hedgehogs love treats. Live insects really are the go-to for these guys. (Canned or freeze-dried ones are okay, but may spoil quickly.) Your little pal can also have cooked meat, or a bit of boiled egg. If you were curious about pumpkin, it’s fine in small amounts. However, because it’s so high in fiber, it can be helpful in relieving constipation in some hedgehogs, but can cause diarrhea in others. Ask your vet for specific advice.

Inspiration

Another option is to just turn the tables and dress yourself or your child as a hedgehog? We know, it’s a bit silly. However, that’s really the point of dressing up in the first place. Some retailers actually do sell hedgehog costumes. If you like to sew, you can also look online for tutorials on making hedgehog outfits.  Do you have questions about hedgehog care?
