Winter Kitten Care

January 15, 2023
Have you recently adopted a kitten? Congratulations! Cats never stop being cute, but they are almost impossibly adorable during their toddler stage. Winter can be a dangerous time for a little furball, though, so you’ll need to take a few extra precautions. A local Ellicott City, MD vet offers some tips on caring for your tiny friend in this article.

Keep Them Warm

Kittens need lots of warm, comfy spots to curl up in. Little Fluffy may enjoy an enclosed pet condo with soft blankets, or perhaps a thermal kitty bed. (Lap space also counts here.) Keep in mind that our feline friends often love to snuggle up beneath blankets or behind cushions. This puts them at risk of being sat on. Baby cats don’t make very big lumps! Check before sitting down.

Watch For Signs Of Illness

Cats can catch colds, just as we can. If an adult feline gets the sniffles, you may not really notice anything: Fluffy may just seem extra sleepy for a few days. However, kittens are very fragile, so any type of illness can be a concern. Keep an eye out for warning signs, such as runny eyes or noses, breathing difficulty, lethargy, or fever. Contact your vet immediately if anything seems off.

Be Cautious With Heat

Candles, fireplaces, wax burners, and electric heaters can be very dangerous for a tiny ball of mischief. Be extra careful with anything that involves heat, flames, or both!

Comfy Environment

It’s going to be a while before the days really start getting longer. If little Fluffy will be home alone while you’re at work, turn a light on before you leave. You don’t want your kitten sitting alone in a dark, quiet house! It’s also important to make sure her dishes and litterbox are easy for her to reach.

Keep Kitty In

We can’t overstate how much safer kitties are staying inside. This is particularly important for young cats, and even more so in winter. Kittens can be over their heads in just a few inches of snow! Snow can also hide scents and landmarks that help cats find their way home. Then there are the ongoing hazards of cars, traffic, and chemicals. Play it safe, and teach little Fluffy that she’s an indoor pet from day one! As your Ellicott City, MD animal clinic, we’re dedicated to offering great care. Contact us anytime!
