Befriending Your New Bunny

April 15, 2023
Are you adopting a new bunny? April is definitely a popular time for this. It’s unfortunately, not uncommon to see a lot of rabbits up for adoption at this time of year, as many are unfortunately adopted as Easter gifts, and rehomed a few weeks later. Adopting a rabbit is a lifetime commitment! Going to a new home is a big deal for Floppy, so it’s important to get things started off on the right paw. Here, an Ellicott City, MD vet offers some advice on making friends with your bunny. Setup Have everything you need ready and waiting for your furry friend before you bring her home. A good cage, chew toys, and fresh grass hay are the most crucial things. Make sure your pet will have plenty of room to stand up, stretch out, hop around, and play without touching the cage walls or sides. Let It Be When you first get Floppy home, put her right into her cage and just let her be. She’ll probably go into her hide and stay there for a while. This may take a day or two, but that’s fine. Let her come out on her own. Rabbits are very timid, and can easily get frightened. If you try to hold or pet Floppy too much before she’s used to you, you may just end up scaring her.  Sweeten The Deal Treats can go a long way towards making friends with your furry pal. When Floppy is curious enough to venture out a little bit, hold a treat out and call her to you. Rabbits love sweet fruits, such as strawberries and bananas. You don’t want to go overboard here, though: too much sugar is not good for your little buddy. Ask your vet for advice. Pet Carefully Bunnies may be small, but they can be furry little divas. Many are pretty fussy about how they like to be petted and handled. Floppy may not mind forehead rubs, but don’t be surprised if she doesn’t enjoy being petted on the cheek or back. Pay attention to what your new buddy seems to like and dislike. Your new friend may never be a lap bunny, but she may enjoy hanging out with you. Please contact us with questions or concerns about your pet’s health or care. As your Ellicott City, MD animal clinic, we are here to help!
