Senior Cat Care

August 1, 2017
Is your kitty seven years or older? If so, Fluffy is approaching her golden years. While your cat’s basic needs—good food, clean litter, and proper veterinary care—will remain the same as she ages, you may want to make some minor changes to her care routine to keep her happy, healthy, and purring. In this article, a Marriottsville, MD vet discusses senior cat care.

Beds

Believe it or not, your cat will sleep even more as she ages. Offer your drowsy pet lots of comfy beds and napping spots. Kitties love birdwatching, so Fluffy will likely appreciate a window seat with a good view.

Climbing

Your cat may have trouble climbing up to her favorite napping spots. Pet ramps or stairs can help her reach that spot on the couch or bed more easily. You can also set out some footstools for her to use as steps.

Comfort

There are some very simple things you can do to keep your feline friend comfortable. We recommend getting a litterbox with low walls, which may be easier for Fluffy to get in and out of. Keeping a nightlight on after dark will also help, as older cats sometimes have trouble seeing at night.

Grooming

Older cats sometimes have trouble reaching their whole bodies to groom themselves. Give your pet a hand by gently brushing her.

Playtime

While your cat may not be as frisky as she was when she was a kitten, she will still have bouts of playfulness. Take a few minutes a day to play with your pet. Jumping, pouncing, and running will help keep your kitty in good shape physically. Plus, focusing on her ‘prey’ will give your feline buddy beneficial mental stimulation.

Veterinary Care

Just like people, cats sometimes experience health issues as they age. Your vet may recommend more frequent appointments. You’ll also want to watch for signs of sickness, such as vomiting, lack of appetite, hiding, diarrhea, or litterbox woes. Contact your vet right away if you notice anything amiss.

Love

The best thing you can do for your cat as she ages is make sure that she feels loved and safe. Spend time with your pet, and let her snuggle up with you sometimes.
