Why Adopt A Rescued Bird?

Birds are wonderful pets that can really bring a lot of love and laughter into your home. Sadly, many birds are rehomed at least once in their lifetimes. This is in part because many people adopt them on impulse, without really understanding what birds need. Sometimes birds also outlive their humans, or make more noise than their owners expected. Regardless of why Polly was rehomed, you may find adopting her a very rewarding and fulfilling experience.

Things To Consider

Adopting any animal is a lifetime commitment, so it’s definitely something to think long and hard about before proceeding. You’ll also want to do plenty of research. Different types of birds have very different personality traits and care needs. It’s also worth considering that many rescued birds have had bad experiences in the past. Birds that were formerly abused—or simply spoiled—can be a handful, and may not be a good option for beginners. On the other hand, some birds really just want to be loved. Just be sure that you are ready, willing, and able to provide your pet with excellent TLC. Also, be prepared to deal with some messes: Polly isn’t necessarily the cleanest roommate.

Finding A Bird

So, you’ve done the research and you’ve decided to proceed. Now what? Start by checking your local animal shelters. Your vet may also be able to refer you to a bird rescue. Speaking of vets, you’ll need a vet that is experienced with birds.

Getting Ready

You should choose your bird before you get the cage, as different birds have different cage requirements. However, you can start birdproofing your home by addressing dangers like toxic plants, wires and cords, and window treatments. You can also pick a spot for the cage. Many birds prefer corners, as they feel more secure when they aren’t exposed. The cage should be in a spot with excellent air quality. Polly should never be exposed to any sort of fumes or vapors.
