Tips for Adopting a Senior Dog

November 1, 2020
November Is Adopt A Senior Dog Month! While there’s really no bad time to give a lucky canine in his golden years a great retirement. If you’re ready to bring a new pup into your home, please consider adopting an older one. An Ellicott City, MD vet gives some tips on this below.

Be Prepared

When it comes to adopting dogs, some things are the same regardless of Fido’s age. You’ll need to get your pooch some doggy basics like grooming supplies, a crate, a leash and collar, and waste baggies. That said, when shopping for a senior dog, keep your canine buddy’s age in mind. For instance, orthopedic beds are great for older pets. You may want to get one with a washable, waterproof cover, in case your furry buddy has accidents. Raised dishes, soft toys, and pet ramps or stairs may also help keep your new pup comfy. Ask your vet for recommendations.

Make Sure You Can Commit

It’s absolutely heartbreaking to see sweet, lovable older pets in shelters, with that sad, lonely look on their furry faces. Many times, older dogs end up being put up for adoption due to sad circumstances. In other cases, they are cruelly abandoned or traded in for ‘younger models.’ Don’t adopt Fido unless you are completely dedicated to providing him with great care for the rest of his life.

Consider Other Pets

Not all homes are right for older dogs. If you have other pooches, we recommend introducing them before you finalize the adoption. Some pups may be too much for a senior dog. If you have a cat, consider Fluffy as well. Ask your vet for specific advice.

Give Yourself A Round Of Applaws

If you’ve adopted an older dog, or are considering doing so, you definitely have our support. We love seeing sweet senior pups get a second chance at a comfortable retirement. This is a wonderful thing to do for our animal friends, and one you may find very rewarding. It’s a truly special feeling to know that you’ve helped an animal in need. Give yourself a pat on the back! And while you’re at it, give Fido some ear scritches for us.  As your local Ellicott City, MD vet clinic, we are dedicated to offering great veterinary care! Please contact us with any questions or concerns about your senior dog’s care.
