7 Common Bunny Care Mistakes

May 15, 2019
Caring for a rabbit is really quite different from caring for a dog or cat. Floppy has her own unique needs, so first-time bunny parents do face a learning curve. Here, an Ellicott City, MD vet lists some common mistakes bunny owners make.

Poor Diet

Many people give their bunnies too many pellets. This can lead to obesity and other health issues. Another diet-related issue we see is feeding muesli-type food. This lets rabbits pick out their favorite bits, which can lead to nutritional imbalances. Giving Floppy too much of the same thing, like fruit or carrots, is another common mistake.

Not Enough Hay

Floppy will need plenty of fresh grass hay. This is absolutely crucial to her health! Bunnies should eat roughly the amount of their body size every day in hay. Don’t feed your rabbit any of the richer hays, like alfalfa, unless your vet recommends it.

Not Letting Floppy Out Enough

Bunnies need daily time out of their cages. Otherwise, they get bored and restless. Before you let Floppy out, be sure to do some bunnyproofing. This will protect both your home and your pet!

Lack of Grooming

Bunnies usually need some help with their beauty rituals. How often you need to brush Floppy will depend on what type of fur she has. Longhaired rabbits, like Angoras, need daily brushings, while others may only need to be brushed weekly. However, you will definitely need to brush your pet daily when she is molting. Dental care and nail trims are also important.

Small/Inappropriate Housing

It’s not uncommon for people to keep bunnies in cages that are too small for them. It’s also important to avoid cages with wire floors. Make sure Floppy has a roomy, comfortable home!

Not Enough Toys

Bunnies are playful and curious, and need to chew to keep their teeth healthy. Floppy should have plenty of playthings, including lots of suitable chew toys.

Lack of Veterinary Care

Just like any other pet, bunnies should see their vets regularly. If your furry pal hasn’t come in for a while, let this be a reminder to set an appointment. Floppy will be much healthier—and therefore happier—with proper care. While you’re there, get some professional advice on your bunny’s care needs. That’s why we’re here!
