Responsible Pet Owners Month

February 1, 2018
Did you know that February is Responsible Pet Ownership Month? This is a great time to talk about some crucial aspects of good pet care. Here, a local Ellicott City, MD vet discusses responsible pet ownership.

Good Food

First things first: make sure your furry buddy is eating good, nutritious food. Treats are fine, but don’t go overboard with fatty snacks. Ask your vet for recommendations, including serving sizes, suitable treats, and supplements.

Exercise

Activity is just as important to pets as it is for people. Make sure that your four-legged friend is getting enough exercise and stimulation. For Fido, this means daily walks. If you have a kitty, take time to play with her every day. Toys are also important.

Safe, Comfy Environment

Pets don’t always know what is and isn’t safe for them, so you’ll need to take some steps to make your home safe for your four-legged buddy. Do some basic petproofing, and remove or secure anything that could potentially be dangerous. If you have a cat, we recommend keeping Fluffy safe and sound indoors, where she isn’t exposed to cars, predators, weather, or other hazards. As for Fido, if you have a yard for him to play in, make sure that your pooch always has shelter, shade, and water outside. You’ll also want make sure that your fencing is secure.

Veterinary Care

Most pets should come in at least once a year, though your animal companion’s exact veterinary care needs will depend on their age, breed, and health. We also recommend that all of our furry patients be microchipped, spayed or neutered, and kept current on vaccinations, exams, and parasite control. Ask your vet for specific recommendations, including warning signs of sickness.

Training

All dogs should know—and obey—basic obedience commands, such as Sit, Stay, Heel, Come, and Lay Down. Housetraining and crate training are also important. (If you have a cat, well, chances are Fluffy will train you, rather than the other way around.)

Comforts

Always keep your pet’s comfort in mind. Keep your furry pal indoors, in climate-controlled rooms, when the weather is bad. Comfy beds, ear scritches, and lots of TLC will all help keep your beloved pet happy and healthy. Please do not hesitate to contact us, your local Ellicott City, MD vet clinic, for all your pet’s veterinary care needs. We are dedicated to providing excellent care!
