Summer Cat Care

July 15, 2021
The Dog Days of summer are approaching fast … and many of our feline patients are less than thrilled about it. Fluffy may not know—or care—what this part of summer is called, but she can definitely tell that it’s really hot out. Overheating is a big danger for kitties at this time of year, so you’ll need to take some precautions to keep your cute pet cool and comfy. A Ellicott City, MD vet discusses summer cat care below.

Keep Kitty In

The best way to protect Fluffy is actually to ground her. Kitties are much safer staying in! Fluffy will not only be protected from soaring temperatures, she’ll also be safe from hazards like parasites, stray animals, traffic, and other hazards.

Water

Cats can’t sweat to cool off, except through their paw pads, which isn’t very efficient for them. Panting doesn’t help much, either. The best thing Fluffy can do to cool herself off if she overheats is to drink lots of water. You may need to set out more than one water bowl, especially if you have more than one kitty and/or a large home. Cats that are allowed outdoors need fresh water outside as well. Many furballs prefer to drink running water, so you may want to try getting your feline pal a pet fountain. Your pet may also appreciate having an ice cube or two dropped into her water bowl.

Brushing

Brushing your furry little diva will also help. This will remove dead hair and dander from her coat. That’s like taking off an extra layer of clothes! You can also use this time to bond with Fluffy, get her motor going, and discretely check her condition.

Cool Beds

You’ve probably noticed that cats are pretty good about getting comfortable. Let Fluffy go where she wants inside the house. She’ll naturally seek out a comfy spot! Just take care not to accidentally lock her in a shed or basement. If you really want to spoil your kitty, make her a hammock bed. You can also move one of her beds near an air conditioner.

Parasite Control

Fleas, ticks, and other parasites can carry dangerous diseases that can make both people and pets very sick. Keep your feline buddy safe by staying current on her parasite control. Is your kitty due for an appointment? Contact us, your Ellicott City, MD veterinary clinic, today!
