Take Your Dog To Work Day

June 15, 2018
June 22nd is Take Your Dog To Work Day! Given the choice, Fido may be delighted to accompany you to work. After all, our canine buddies want nothing more than to spend time with their human best friends! Read on as a local Ellicott City, MD vet offers tips on taking your furry pal to work with you.

Preparations

Before taking Fido to work, make sure that he is up to date on his exams, vaccinations, and parasite control. Your furry friend should also be microchipped and wearing current ID tags. Petiquette is also important. If your pooch isn’t housetrained yet, or hasn’t quite mastered basic doggy obedience commands like Sit, Stay, Come, Heel, and Lay Down, send him back to school.

The Big Day

Before bringing your canine friend to work, give him a good bath. You don’t want your office to smell like dog! On the morning of Fido’s first day, take him for a nice long walk before heading to the workplace. You may also want to tire your pet out with a fun session of Fetch. That way, your pup will be more likely to spend the morning napping.

Doggy Work History

Working dogs can actually be found in all walks of life. Fido has been a guard dog, guide, therapy dog, hunter, and cattle rancher, to name just a few things. He’s also excelled at search and rescue, and is often found helping law enforcement and the military. Not all of our canine pals’ experience is that impressive, however. Many pups can be found napping behind counters at their owners’ shops, or just sitting beside them at their desks!

Choosing A Job For Fido

Make sure to get permission from your boss before bringing Fido to work. Check with your co-workers as well. Most companies that are open to ‘hiring’ pets will be up-front about it, and will let employees know their pets are welcome. Of course, not all industries are right for our four-legged buddies. If you work in a loud or busy environment, you’re probably better off leaving your furry bff at home. Needless to say, if you have a St Bernard, and work in a china shop … you’ll probably want to leave your pooch at home. Is your canine companion ready for vaccinations or parasite control?
