Fall With Senior Dogs

October 15, 2023
Autumn is officially upon us. As the seasons change, you’ll need to make some minor adjustments to your canine buddy’s care regimen. If you have a puppy, your focus may be on keeping little Fido from eating your Halloween decorations or digging up your garden. Older dogs aren’t as prone to mischief, but they still need some extra care here. A local Ellicott City, MD vet offers some tips on caring for an older dog in fall in this article.

Consider Supplements

As Fido ages, his nutritional needs will change a bit. Your pooch may benefit from taking supplements, especially if he gets stiff and sore. Of course, these are not one-size-fits-all: the best option would really depend on your canine pal’s health and any medical conditions he has. For instance, glucosamine and fish oil can both be helpful for pups with bone and joint issues, while Vitamin E may be a better choice for a pup with skin problems. Ask your vet for specific advice.

Offer Good Bedding

It’s important for your furry friend to be able to sleep well. A thin pad won’t offer much insulation, and it won’t offer enough support for his old bones. Orthopedic beds are the go-to choice for seniors. If you have a large house, consider getting more than one bed: Fido will appreciate having options!

Groom Carefully

Fido’s fur is his main protection against the cold. Good grooming is very important here. Dead fur and dander are not only itchy and uncomfortable, they also decrease the insulating qualities of his coat. Stay on top of your pup’s beauty needs.

Paws For Thought

Long nails and cracked paw pads both interfere with Fido’s ability to get good traction, and can increase the risks of dangerous slips and falls. Keep up with those pawdicures! We’d also recommend getting some pet-safe de-icing products.

Veterinary Care

Your canine companion may need to come in more often, so his health can be carefully monitored. This also increases the chances of developing conditions being spotted early on, which is always beneficial. Preventative care is also crucial. Follow your vet’s recommendations.

Fun

Fido may not be as active as he once was, but he’ll still need regular exercise. Savor this special time in your dog’s life! Take your pooch out for a nice stroll on one of those beautiful autumn days.     Do you have questions about your pet’s health or care? Contact us, your Ellicott City, MD animal clinic, today.
