Great Ways To Spoil A Rabbit

September 15, 2021
Do you have a pet bunny? If so, you may want to mark your calendar for September 25th. It’s International Rabbit Day! While you certainly don’t need an excuse to spoil your adorable pet, this is a perfect time to show Floppy some extra TLC. An Ellicott City, MD vet suggests some ways to pamper your furry friend below.

Treats

Rabbits are just as enthusiastic about treats as dogs and cats, but they do have some different preferences. They actually tend to get very enthusiastic about fruits. Your pet can have small amounts of things like cherries (no pits), papaya, apricots, apple slices, melon, bananas, and strawberries. Just be sure to research new foods before giving them to your bunny, to make sure they’re safe.

Hay Rack

Fresh grass hay, such as Timothy hay, should be the main part of your bunny’s menu. If Floppy doesn’t have a hay rack, this is a great time to get her one. You may also find some cute DIY options online.

Buddies

Do you only have one rabbit? If so, you may want to consider getting Floppy a friend. Bunnies can form very strong bonds with each other. Just don’t keep two unneutered boys together. Ask your vet for specific advice on choosing another rabbit, and helping them bond.

Research

Education is the gift that gives on giving. No matter what kind of pet you have, there’s always more to learn. Do some reading about bunny care. You may be surprised at what you learn!

Toys

Floppy is very playful. New toys are a great way to score yourself some bunny happy dances, or binkies, as they are officially called. Many cardboard items will work just fine. For instance, you can stuff the tubes from toilet paper rolls with hay or herbs. Ask your vet for suggestions.

New Digs

Could your pet use a bigger cage? Get her a bigger, comfier home. If your rabbit is living in an outdoor hutch, consider bringing her indoors. She will be happier and healthier—not to mention more comfortable—living inside with the rest of the family.

Quality Time

Many bunnies don’t care much for being held, but that doesn’t mean they don’t like interacting with their humans. Spend some time with your adorable petl! As your Ellicott City, MD animal clinic, we are dedicated to offering top-notch care. Contact us anytime!
