Keeping Your Bird Healthy

November 1, 2021
This week has gone to the birds: it’s Bird Health Appreciation Week! Our feathered pals make very fun and entertaining pets, so it’s no wonder that they have so many ‘raven’ fans. Of course, Polly needs good care to thrive, just like any other pet. An Ellicott City, MD vet offers some advice on keeping your winged buddy happy and healthy below.

Feed Properly

A good diet is crucial to your winged pal’s health and well-being. Polly’s diet should consist mostly of pellets, supplemented with seeds and fresh safe produce. Be sure to only offer your pet things that you know are safe for her. Don’t give your bird avocado, peanuts, or any fruit seeds or pips. Ask your vet for more information.

Habitat

Make sure that Polly has a roomy, comfortable cage equipped with suitable toys and perches. Bigger is definitely better here! It’s also important to keep your winged friend’s cage clean.

Allow Free Time

A great cage is a must, but your pet shouldn’t be locked up all the time. Polly needs plenty of free time out of her cage, so she can get some exercise, play, and maybe even dance.

Safety

You’ll need to keep Polly out of trouble. Birdproofing is a must! That means addressing anything that your pet could hurt herself on. That includes things like fans, candles, toxins, small or sharp objects, mirrors, window treatments, anything with ropes or cords, and even kitchen appliances. Ask your vet for specific advice.

Fresh Air

Polly’s lungs are very sensitive, so it’s very important for her to be breathing fresh, pure air at all times. Don’t expose your colorful little pet to things like cigarette smoke, aerosols, cooking fumes, or vapors from cleaning agents, paint, glue, dye, or automotive products. Even wax burners can be too strong!

Veterinary Care

Polly will need to come in for regular exams. She may also need wing and/or beak trims. Follow your vet’s recommended appointment schedule. At home, you’ll also need to watch for signs that something is wrong. This includes things like loss of appetite, damaged or discolored feathers, listlessness, unusual vocalizations, discharge, swelling, strange postures, weight loss, lack of appetite, and changes in the amount, color, texture, or odor of her waste.
