5 Great Reasons To Love Senior Pets

November 1, 2022
November is Adopt A Senior Pet Month! If you’re ready to bring a new pet into your home, you may want to consider getting an older animal. Senior pets are not only super sweet, they also have some wonderful qualities. An Ellicott City, MD vet lists some key benefits of adopting a senior pet below.

They’re Adorable

Fido and Fluffy are always cute, but they somehow manage to get even more lovable with age. Older dogs look really distinguished and charming with gray muzzles, while senior kitties tend to be sleepy and affectionate. They also usually have a very friendly and affectionate demeanor.

Prior Training

We know, puppies and kittens are adorable. They’re also super mischievous, and need quite a bit of pet parenting. Older pets, however, usually already have an idea of what is expected of them. Fido will most likely already know basic doggy commands, while Fluffy will be a master at using litterboxes and (hopefully) scratching posts.

They’re Calm

Dogs and cats in their golden years are usually more interested in naps and cuddles than in tearing up your sofa or knocking everything off your table. There’s a lot to be said for having a furry pal that is content to just snooze on your lap or at your feet! Senior pets are also often very patient with puppies, kittens, and even young children.

Short Commitment

Adopting a pet is a lifetime commitment, which is not something to take lightly. If you get a puppy or kitten, that may mean signing on for over a decade of pet parenting. With older pets, the commitment is shorter, simply because they don’t have as much time. That can be quite beneficial, especially for those who aren’t sure where they’ll be in five or ten years.

They Can Melt Hearts

Pets have a very special way of reaching into our hearts. Our animal friends can form really strong connections with us. They just want someone to love them, pet them, and give them cuddles and treats. You may find that tail wags and purrs from pets in their golden years really are special. Plus, giving one of these sweet pets a second chance may be a really rewarding experience! As your Ellicott City, MD animal clinic, we are dedicated to offering the best veterinary care around.
