Guests And Pets

December 15, 2022
Are you having visitors over the next few weeks? It’s always great to reconnect with friends and family at this time of year. Of course, there is a chance for mishaps between your visitors and your animal companion. Not everyone is going to be as charmed by your furry pal as we are! People who don’t have pets of their own could also inadvertently put your dog or cat at risk, even if just by accidentally leaving out something that isn’t safe. We can help! Here, an Ellicott City, MD vet offers some tips on helping your guests and your pet get along.

Ground Rules

You don’t need to present your guests with an official rulebook, but there’s nothing wrong with making some simple requests. The biggest things are asking visitors not to feed, tease, or discipline your pet without asking. Depending on your setup—and how likely your furry buddy is to dash out an open door—you may also need to ask people to be extra careful as they’re coming and going.

Introductions

First impressions are a big deal to pets! Having your guests offer pre-approved toys and treats. This can help them gain Fido and Fluffy’s approval. Just don’t go overboard.

Guest Room

If your guests are staying overnight, ask them to keep their door shut. This will help prevent mishaps, such as Fido chewing someone’s shoes or Fluffy knocking a glass of water onto a tablet. (We’ll leave kitties’ habits of sleeping in suitcases for another blog.)

Meals

It’s wonderful sharing those delicious seasonal meals with loved ones. However, many of the things on that scrumptious spread are likely unsafe for pets. Begging can be quite problematic, as Fido and Fluffy could convince someone to give them something dangerous, like meat on the bone. You also just don’t want to encourage bad habits. If your four-legged friend is already a little (or a lot) spoiled in this area, keep them in another room during meals.

Supervision

Paw and tail injuries are quite common at this time of year, as Fido and Fluffy are always underfoot. Keep a close eye on them! If you’re having a party, offer your four-legged pal a spot in a quiet back room.

Love

The holidays can be stressful for pets, too. Pay extra attention to your furry bff!  Happy Holidays! Please contact us, your Ellicott City, MD animal clinic, anytime!
