Spotlight On Huskies

December 15, 2021
Are you considering adopting a snow dog, such as a husky? These beautiful, intelligent dogs can make truly outstanding pets. However, they can also be a handful! It’s important for you to do plenty of research before adopting one, to ensure that you’re choosing the right pet for your household. An Ellicott City, MD vet discusses snow dog care below.

Temperament

Snow dogs tend to be very, very active. Make sure that you’re ready for a dog that needs lots of exercise and stimulation! This is one situation where ‘if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em’ definitely applies. Work with Fido’s temperament, rather than against it. Offer your pooch plenty of toys and exercise. Otherwise, he may challenge all that energy into destructive behaviors. Just keep in mind that these dogs can easily overheat in summer.

Territory

These pooches are highly prone to running off in search of adventure. Huskies are very territorial. However, as far as Fido is concerned, his doggy ‘kingdom’ may extend for miles. If you have a yard, get a good, sturdy fence, one Fido can’t dig under or jump over.

Vocalizations

Snow dogs don’t bark so much as howl or sing, and they are not shy about voicing their opinions! Fido may also complain about things like having to come inside or getting bathed. If you have more than one of these pretty pups, you may find yourself being serenaded by a canine chorus!

Training

Training is a must for snow dogs. If you aren’t experienced with training pups, it’s in your best interests to consult a professional. It’s also worth noting that huskies have a tendency to pull. This is only to be expected, given Fido’s history as a sled dog. You’ll also need to curb that habit.

Grooming

Snow dogs have absolutely gorgeous coats, which for many is part of their appeal. Fido should be brushed daily, especially during shedding season. A good vacuum is a must. Never clip or shave your pet’s fur, as this can damage his undercoat. (On the bright side, snow dogs are naturally clean, and rarely stink.)

Veterinary Care

Just like any other breed, huskies are prone to some specific health problems. Cancer, eye diseases, skin problems are common with them. Keep up with Fido’s veterinary care needs! Do you have questions about snow dog care? Contact us, your Ellicott City, MD animal clinic, anytime!
