Keeping Your Cat Indoors

October 1, 2019
Did you know that over million cats go missing each year? Sadly, many of these kitties would be safe and sound at home if they had been kept inside. Our feline pals are both safer and healthier staying inside, where they are safe from the dangers posed by cars, predators, and other hazards. An Ellicott City, MD discusses keeping your cat indoors.

Stopping Escape Attempts

While some cats are determined to get out, even former strays often realize in time that living indoors is both safer and more comfortable. However, if your pet isn’t really taking well to being grounded, she may try to bolt out the door. Whenever Fluffy ventures near the door, do something that will annoy her without hurting her. Clap your hands, stomp your foot, or bang two pots together. This will startle Fluffy, which is definitely one of her pet peeves. After a few incidents, your kitty may become much more wary of the door.

Entertainment

One reason cats like going outdoors is that the Great Outdoors offers stimulation and entertainment. Sniffing plants, chasing things, and rolling around in the sun are all some of Fluffy’s favorite activities. Fortunately, your pet can do all of these things inside as well. Offer your kitty lots of fun toys to pounce on, and take time to play with her daily. You can also bring the outside in by setting out some pet-safe plants for your kitty to sniff at and nibble on. Check the ASPCA site here for options. Kitties also enjoy having a window seat with a good view.

Kitty Comforts

Small touches will make your home more fun and comfortable for your pet. If you leave Fluffy home alone, turn a light and radio on for her if you’ll be out after dark. No one likes sitting alone in a dark, quiet house! Your furry pal will also appreciate having boxes, newspaper tunnels, and pieces of kitty furniture to explore. A clean litterbox and some soft beds are also musts.

Veterinary Care

Just because Fluffy is an indoor cat doesn’t mean she doesn’t still have to visit her doctor. Your feline friend will be healthier—and therefore happier—with proper veterinary care! Ask your vet to recommend an appointment schedule. Please contact us, your local Ellicott City, MD vet clinic, for all your cat’s veterinary care needs. We’re here to help!
