Safety Tips for Walking Your Dog

September 15, 2019
Daily walks are an important part of your dog’s care regimen. Even if Fido has a yard to play in, he’ll still benefit from the exercise and stimulation of those daily strolls. Just be sure to put safety first. An Ellicott City, MD vet offers some tips on walking your dup in this article.

Roadside

If you are walking along the side of a road, keep Fido to the outside. He’s shorter, and won’t be as easy for drivers to spot, especially coming around corners. Also, don’t let your pooch get in front of you, particularly when you are approaching driveways or intersections.

Nighttime

When walking your pooch after dark, always bring a flashlight and cell phone with you. Stick to well-lit, safe paths, and don’t linger too long. You’ll also want to get a reflective leash for your furry friend, and a reflective coat for yourself.

Training

Make sure that your canine buddy knows simple commands, like Stop, Stay, Heel, and Come. This is very important for safety reasons! If you drop Fido’s leash, you want to make sure that he will still obey you.

Ground

Keep a close eye on the ground when you’re out and about with your pup. Steer your canine pal around hazardous objects, like broken glass. Also, stay away from dangerous areas, like riverbanks.

Hacks

Do you often find yourself running around, trying to get everything you need? Designate a specific bag or jacket for walking your furry friend. Fill the pockets with everything you may need, such as waste baggies, a phone charger, spare keys, ear buds, and gloves.

Music

Speaking of ear buds, you make enjoy listening to music or podcasts when walking Fido. Just don’t turn the volume up too far. It’s important for you to hear what’s going on around you, and be aware of things like squealing brakes or barking dogs.

Footwear

If there is snow or ice on the ground, you’ll need to wear shoes with good treads, so you don’t slip or fall. You may want to pick out a pair of boots or sneakers just for dog walking. Have Fun Remember to enjoy this special time with your furry best friend. The activity and fresh air will be good for you both! Please reach out to us, your local Ellicott City, MD vet clinic, anytime. We are happy to help!
