8 Great Reasons to Adopt a Guinea Pig

March is Adopt A Rescued Guinea Pig Month! If you’re looking for a pet that is small in size but big in personality, a Guinea pig may be perfect for you. Although any time is a good time to adopt a rescued Guinea pig—or any other animal, for that matter—this really is a wonderful time to give one of these guys a great forever home. Read on as an Ellicott City, MD vet lists some reasons to consider adopting a Guinea pig.

They’re Cute

First and foremost, Guinea pigs—or cavies, as they are sometimes called—are absolutely adorable. Plus, they come in a variety of colors, patterns, and coat types. If you like fluffy pets, you can get one with long fur. You can also get cavies with curls, or ones sporting fashionable markings, like spots.

They’re Clean

Guinea pigs are quite clean little pets. They can even learn to use litterboxes. That’s definitely a big plus!

Wheeks

We all know that dogs bark and cats meow. Guinea pigs also have their own sound, which is officially (okay, maybe not so officially) known as the wheek. We probably don’t have to tell you how adorable this is.

They Like To Cuddle

Although many smaller pets are quite timid, Guinea pigs often get quite attached to their owners. Your pet may recognize you, and learn to come when called. Some cavies even like to snuggle up in their humans’ laps!

They’re Gentle

Guinea pigs are quite docile and friendly. As long as they have been properly socialized, they rarely bite. This is one reason that they’re such popular children’s pets.

They Aren’t Expensive

You may find that cavies are actually quite budget-friendly. Of course, you will have the ongoing expenses of food, substrate, and veterinary care.

DIY Toys

Cavies have open-rooted teeth, which means that they must chew constantly. Fortunately, you can make many of your pet’s toys out of common household items. For example, the tubes from toilet paper rolls make great chew toys.

They Need Love, Too

We believe that all animals, big and small, should be treated with kindness, compassion, and dignity. You may find that even giving a few Guinea pigs a good forever home is very rewarding!
